A Grinding Halt

No, we are not talking about my intestinal tract again.

My camera broke.

It was fine on Thursday night, when I was snapping away merrily at pieces of prosciutto. Sadly – although, also not sadly, because what a way to go – that would be the last thing it would ever photograph. When I turned it on today, I was able to see the old photos on the memory card. I deleted them and switched over to shoot a photo of a beautiful persimmon I bought… only to look into a black screen of nothingness.

The best part was I had just this morning figured out that with the push of a single button, there are some really neat functions even on the very basic and inexpensive camera I have that could have improved the shots I’ve been taking all along. It was one of those embarrassing moments (sort of like Luisa’s discovery of her broiler), during which I reminded myself that maybe reading instruction manuals isn’t a total waste of time and, uh, wow, some of those photos could have been so much better. So, so much. With one little click.

But we’ll never know, since my camera is now the existential blank nothingness camera that only takes photos of black squares. Or appears to anyway.

I posted in a panic about this on Oh Hey Great and discovered there’s a known malfunction with certain Canon models (of which my camera is one). Canon even has a support page dedicated to the problem, which sounds like what I’m experiencing. So I’ll call tomorrow (or Tuesday, if they’re observing the holiday) and see if this is fixable. In the meantime, I’ll be borrowing a very nice person’s camera now and again and will occasionally make do with my camera phone if necessary. There will still be pretty pictures, I promise! Even if I have to use old ones.

Hey, I never let a little internal malfunction stop me before.

tomato paella

A pretty picture, as promised, of the tomato paella I made last summer – the Mark Bittman recipe that wowed Luisa and everyone on this coast too. Made during the height of this summer’s outrageously good tomato season. If you missed out, I’m sad for you.

I think Mark Bittman’s “How to Cook Everything” should be a high-school graduation present for EVERYONE. It’s still my go-to cookbook for a lot of things, like the RAISED WAFFLES. Those waffles scored me a husband I will have you know.

I have never been much of a waffle maker but I am about to embark on some waffle-making in the next few weeks (will be borrowing a waffle iron). Now I wish I had the Mark Bittman cookbook. Not necessarily because I am looking to score a husband but because I would like to make a good waffle, and if the waffle you made was husband-ensnaringly-good, then yeah. My point is I want that book, so I need to win the lottery.
